You could say The Green Spot Home and Garden Centre is a business for the seasons.
You know spring is around the corner when you visit the store at the beginning of April.
The tables filled with fledgling bedding plants provide a sea of green that’s a welcome sight after months of winter.
In May, the blooming plants are ‘garden ready.’ For the rest of the spring and summer, plants and trees, along with gardening and patio accessories take centre stage.
By September, outdoor plants have run their course. Staff will begin filling the tables with colourful poinsettia displays in early November.
This signals the annual transformation of the 30,000 square foot retail space into a festive Christmas Market.
From January to March, visiting the store offers a nice break from winter. You can enjoy the warmth of the sun streaming through the overhead skylights, mild, humid air and tropical plants.
When Bernie Whetter purchased The Green Spot in 2007, he could have continued with the status quo. The store was a popular year-round destination. Tropicals, giftware and gardening products complemented the annual plant and tree sales.
But, Bernie knew the business had the potential to grow; creating the Christmas Market was the first step. Today, the retail operation bills itself as ‘one spot, many shops’.
These include Elements Home and Garden Decor, The Patio, The Garden Shed, and The Pantry.
Three years ago, Bernie added women’s clothing to the Green Spot’s offerings and has been very pleased with the response to Department 49 for Fashion.
Bernie continues to fine-tune The Green Spot’s product mix and enhance his customers’ all-season experience.
