We framed this awesome vintage flag for one of our customers. In World War II his grandfather was on a ship that met up with an American ship and he swapped flags with a sailor on that ship. I wonder where the Canadian flag is now?

Tips for caring for your framed art

Quality framing materials can look great for years, decades, or even generations if they are properly cared for.

Most problems arise from improper care and handling.

Here is a helpful tip to keep your framed art looking its best when moving, courtesy of Larson-Juhl:

Make sure your frames are well-wrapped to transport to a new home.

Obviously, you will want to protect the front of the frame so it will look beautiful in your new home.

In addition, the hangers on the back of frames can scratch whatever they come in contact with if they aren’t covered.

If you can put them in boxes, that is ideal, otherwise, bubble wrap will work well as long as you remember not to lean anything against it.

Tips for hanging framed items

We offer these tips courtesy of Larson-Juhl.

Even the most beautiful pieces of framed art can still look awkward if they are not hung logically.

Some of the key considerations are:

  • Choosing framed art that fits the space where it will hang
  • Hang frames in reasonably close proximity to the furniture below it to create unison
  • Hang frames at eye level for maximum viewing pleasure, keeping in mind people stand in foyers and halls and sit in many other spaces so that height can vary.

To avoid crooked frames on the wall

When frames are hung from a single point, they usually shift on the wall over time.

Both for safety and also to keep frames straight, always hang everything from two points.

On heavier pieces this also helps distribute the weight.

Framed items and your decor

Today, we offer these framing tips courtesy of Larson-Juhl.

Custom framing is an integral part of decorating a home or business.

In fact, when you buy quality custom framing, it is like purchasing furniture for your walls.

When selecting art and framing, your number one goal should be to find something you love.

Do not settle for art simply because it matches your colour scheme.

If the colours do coordinate, that’s OK, but it really shouldn’t match too well because you want it to stand out so it becomes a special accent in the room.

Tips for hanging framed items in larger rooms

Sandra Parlow Lasting Image custom framing

Sandra Parlow, co-owner, Lasting image

Today, we offer these tips courtesy of Larson-Juhl:

Over the past few decades, as large homes popped up across North America furniture manufacturers have followed suit, creating pieces to be proportional to the larger rooms.

When you are having something custom framed, be aware that the proportions of the frame and mat can help balance it too.

A single piece of art can be framed larger or smaller to fit different spaces.

Quick tips on the best height to hang pictures

Marlene LeFlar

Marlene LeFlar, co-owner, Lasting Image

Pictures are often hung on a wall too high – they are best viewed at eye level.

As a guide, hang pictures:

  • about 60 inches from the floor to the centre of the picture.
  • over a sofa with about 5-10 inches of space between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame.
  • above furniture with about 3-6 inches from the top of the furniture to the bottom of the frame.

Make a paper template the size of the picture and attach it to the wall with painters tape.

You can place the template at various heights to locate the spot you like best.
