Indoor plants good for body and soul
Plants add a pleasing touch to the decor of a home or office that is particularly appreciated in the winter months.
But an indoor plant is more than a design feature, it can also add to your emotional and physical health and well being.
A study for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), conducted by Dr. Bill Wolverton, showed that plants can cleanse indoor air of unhealthy volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene.
Among the air purifying plants recommended by Wolverton in his book, How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 Houseplants That Purify Your Home or Office, are:
English Ivy, Spider plant, Dracaena, Gerbera Daisy, Rubber plant, Mother-in-law Tongue, and Pot Mum.
Other researchers have found that plants can reduce dust, increase humidity and decrease airborne moulds.
The influence of plants on emotional and physical health has been studied extensively and shows that having access to natural features such as plants have positive effects.
Lowered stress levels, faster recovery rates from illness, increased productivity and job satisfaction were among the results of these studies.
Tropical plants are particularly appealing because of their variety:
• A member of the lily family, the ponytail palm tree is native to Mexico.
It can grow up to 2.5 metres indoors, has dark green, grasslike leaves and functions best in bright sun or light shade.
• The Areca palm, a native of Madagascar, has slender, feathery, yellow green fronds and thrives in bright indirect light.
• Native to Africa and Asia, the gardenia is a flowering plant with deep green, smooth, shiny leaves and requires bright, indirect light.
There are interesting options for displaying plants throughout the home such as creating a spa-like atmosphere in the bathroom with a variety of plants or grouping plants of varying heights and foliage together
Potted plants can be placed in the garden over the spring and summer, then brought indoors during the autumn and winter months.

Today we offer a framing solution, courtesy of Larson-Juhl, to help you place framed art in an open floor plan.
An open floor plan means fewer walls separating spaces.
Since walls are the usual spot to display framed pieces, you may need to look for other alternatives.
Try displaying a painting on a floor easel in the corner, setting smaller frames in bookcases, etc.
Open floor plans allow you to see farther from room to room.
To maximize viewing pleasure, consider selecting somewhat more dramatic art to frame when it can be seen from a longer distance.
